Here's a list of famous, semi-famous, or significant people I've been within 50 ft. of, in no particular order:

Itzhak Perlman: I went with my mom to a concert at Tilles Center of Itzhak Perlman and his daughter playing violin and piano respectively. After the show I asked my mom if we could meet him and she asked an usher. The usher got on his walkie talkie and took us to behind the scenes, where Itzhak was signing autographs and taking pictures. I was in middle school at the time and I liked playing the violin. I rarely do so these days.

Susan Lucci: It was assigned to us in our MASS001 class to attend a discussion, speech, or assembly concerning mass communication at Hofstra and then write a page or so about the experience. So Susan Lucci, who lives in Garden City, came to the Student Center one night and talked about how famous she was. There were a bunch of drama queens in the audience telling her how great she was. One of them asked where she got her shoes. She was wearing an ensemble and hairstyle worthy of the daytime Emmy award. In the Student Center theater of Hofstra University. Erica Kane.

David Silverman: He gave a talk at Geneseo and showed a bunch of behind-the-scenes-type clips of The Simpsons. I asked a snot-nosed question which I won't repeat. But some stupid bitch who was in a bunch of my classes asked "How do you come up with all of the couch gags?" I really wonder what kind of answer she was looking for.

Mo Rocca: Also spoke at Geneseo. He put on a funny show.

Sam Kininger of Soulive: Tony played with Sam at Da Funky Fish in Bay Shore. I've never been so proud of Tony for being a whiz on the saxophone and so ashamed of myself for being such a bad drunk. I use that night as one of the reasons I shouldn't get too drunk.

Tommy Lee: Last Winter at Best Buy, Tommy Lee was signing copies of his then new album Tommyland: The Ride. I was put in charge of controlling entry to the line to get the CD signed. There's nothing much more to the story. Tommy Lee, yes, Tommy Lee.

Wayne Coyne: I went to Berkfest 2003 by myself. I had a lot of fun, despite being there by myself. I went to check out some electronic band that was playing during the day in one of the ski lodges. It might have been Al Schnier's solo project. But anyway, up next to me walked Wayne. It was great, I totally said hi to him and shook his hand. I told him I was looking forward to his performance that night. After he walked away I got it in my head that I should have asked him if he could get me on stage. I've had it in my head ever since. That night I ate mushrooms and acid and fucking had the time of my life watching the Flaming Lips. Which provides a nice segue to--

Paul Simon: At the Flaming Lips show this summer, Paul Simon was on the balcony about 30 feet behind us at the Hammerstein Ballroom with wife Edie Brickell. The Flaming Lips put on a show where no matter which way you look, there's something going on. Whenever I looked behind me to the right, Paul Simon was there.

Terry Gilliam: Josh hit me to an event at IFC theater where Terry Gilliam was giving a Q&A and screening one of his favorite movies, Toto the Hero, which is one of the best movies I've seen in a theater, in promotion of his new movie Tideland, which I still have not seen. I found the whole thing very insightful and Terry Gilliam seems to be a great guy. I didn't ask any questions, and quite resented all of the questions that were asked. One of the questions was all right, someone asked what music he'd been listening to. Among the bands were Flaming Lips and Arcade Fire, who I've been enjoying a lot lately. I only wish I brought something for him to sign. Fucking Terry Gilliam.

Tom Perrotta and Todd Field: Just earlier this week, I went with Tim to Staten Island to look for apartments for him because he's moving there later this month. One incentive, other than moral support, was that afterward he was going to Barnes and Noble on Broadway to a discussion and book signing with Tom Perrotta and Todd Field, writers and director of Little Children. I read the novel a few years ago and didn't even know the film came out recently. The film is all right, I wasn't taken by it as much as Tim or my mom were. But my mom really loved the film, so I lent her the novel, which I soon stole to have personalized and autographed for her by Tom and Todd. She was really happy about it. I was happy that I was able to do that for her. I got my copy of In the Bedroom signed by Todd. I would have told either of them how much appreciate their work, but I didn't because that's pretty much what everyone else did. So I just got the shit signed and peaced out.

That's all I can think of for right now. I've been thinking that one day I'll be famous enough for strangers to admire me. I'll make someone's favorite movie. Or I'll be a favorite person of someone. And at least they'll think I'm great, even though they know nothing about me.

Or I'll marry some famous broad and it'll be the same.
