Haagen Dazs once again owns a considerable fraction of my life. When I went back after the one-year hiatus, I thought I'd grown more tolerant of the bullshit, being one year older and wiser. But it's crawled its way back up my ass and I'm devoting at least 12 hours a week at $9/hr to sitting and waiting for closing time, trying to answer two conflicting questions: why am I still there, and why do I want to leave a job that pays for doing nothing? I guess 12 hours doesn't seem too bad. But it is. It's spent in the company of people who are there for no longer than 5 minutes at a time, whom you don't know, whom you don't particularly care for and in some cases don't like for no good reason.

I sometimes read books. I found The Portable Graham Greene in my house and brought it to work. The Destructors took no time, but I've been reading The Third Man for about three weeks in 10-page installments each weekend. If you've never seen The Third Man, starring Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles, it's a good one. The story and film are pretty much the same; Greene wrote the story and screenplay almost simultaneously, I think. I like reading, but you can never get in more than half-a-page before the next customer walks in.

I also bought a Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. But it's really not worth spending any time playing games when you have to stop so often.

Anyhow, I saw Borat tonight, and while I didn't think it was as extraordinarily funny as everyone takes it to be (I think I've had my fill of Sacha Baron Cohen), I couldn't help being reminded of Drita--my Albanian, anti-Semetic, homophobic co-worker who displays each and every stereotype of the the very minorities she fears, in broken English--and how much I love her.

I was looking at the menus of restaurants in the greater Rockville Centre area while at Haagen Dazs and I came across Drita's application for employment. It looks exactly like this:

She spent a few days in the can when she first arrived in this country:
