I've never had much of a passion for brushing my teeth. I get compliments every now and again in the direction of how white my teeth are, but I suppose it's because they appear brighter in contrast to my tan skin. I also have pretty straight teeth, which may add to the illusion of a bright smile. There may have been a point in my life when I brushed them twice a day, but for no longer than a week straight. I tell the hygienist otherwise, but I'm lying through the very teeth in question.

When we were younger, my sister and I needed to stand on a stool in order to brush so that we could see into the mirror. After a while, she didn't need it any longer. And after more time, the stool was abandoned completely. It was a plastic stool that I'm not sure would support my current weight. But at the time, I was much lighter.

I remember once my dad got this electric toothbrush with a set of detachable heads that he, my sister, and I would use to brush our teeth with. At different times, of course. This was when I used to brush my teeth in one of the two upstairs bathrooms, the one in the hallway that leads from my room to the living room. These days I use the one downstairs, where I also shower and shave. Well, he got this electric toothbrush that I remember would give off an awful but familiar battery smell whenever it was used. And once, I thought I spat out blood, but it was only residue from a Flintstone's chewable vitamin.

I used to squeeze the toothpaste from the middle of the tube and leave the water running as I brushed. These are two practices I am now adamantly against. Because squeezing from the bottom really does yield the best results and running water is a valuable resource that many people in the world aren't fortunate enough to experience as frequently as they should.

I was also very impatient in the way of finishing an entire tube before moving onto the next. Starting a new tube of paste was exciting enough for me to completely discard the current tube, which still may have been two-thirds-full of toothpaste. I may have, at once, had three tubes of different types of toothpaste going on rotation, and I'm sure a few were thrown out without being completely spent.

Old habits die hard. There's a half a tube of Crest Whitening Expressions that has gone unused since I started a tube Colgate Total White. And even still I get the urge to move on. It feels as if I've been squeezing from the same tube of Colgate for months and months and getting nowhere. Meanwhile there's a fresh tube, still in the box, of Aquafresh Tartar Control in the drawer under the basin that I can't wait to use. Needless to say, Aquafresh is much more enticing than Colgate, being that it is tri-colored as opposed to solid blue. The half-tube of Crest will probably never be squeezed again. It's got a nasty citrus flavor that some may find refreshing, but I find repulsive. I'm going to have patience, though, and finish the Colgate before starting the Aquafresh. I'm not sure what will be done about the Crest, though.

I have a lot to do tomorrow.

I've gotten into the habit of rinsing with Fresh Burst Listerine before brushing with the Colgate. The directions say to rinse for 30 seconds, but I can't last that long; it's way too strong. But I supposed 15 seconds is better than no seconds. Before the Fresh Burst, I had a bottle of the golden original kind that tastes like the 1920s. Real antiseptic stuff. I might get it again once the Fresh Burst is gone. Remember when Listerine came in cylindrical paper packaging?
